Flies

Flies are a nuisance pest and are found in and around homes all over the United States. There are many different species, but they all have a short life span of about 2 to 4 weeks. (The cooler the conditions, the longer the Fly's lifespan tends to be.)

Damage

Flies mostly feed on decaying organic materials. Flies lay eggs in moist organic matter including, grass clippings, fecal matter, moist garbage and rotting fruits and vegetables. New eggs hatch within a day, and the newly-born maggots become adult Flies within a week. They are a year-round pest and have the ability to transmit diseases.

Controlling Flies

Controlling Flies takes persistence indoors and outdoors, and must include good sanitation. Insecticide treatments may be necessary inside and outside (including anywhere Flies might land, such as on walls or plants, and areas where they might breed). Traps, such as sticky paper, can also reduce numbers. The most common Flies (Houseflies) have two big, colored eyes, two wings and six legs.

Location

Flies are found throughout the United States.
