Mushrooms are the reproductive structure of fungi that live on organic matter such as buried logs, lumber, roots or stumps in the soil. Most mushrooms do not damage lawns, but they can be unsightly. Those growing in circles (see Fairy Rings) may make the soil impermeable to water and can injure the grass. Mushrooms will usually disappear after the organic matter has been broken down.
Cultural Solutions
- There are no permanent solutions to eliminate mushrooms, but breaking the mushrooms with a rake or lawn mower may temporally improve the appearance of the turf.
- Proper water, fertilizer and aerating may help reduce numbers.
