Silverfish

Silverfish are ½ inch long, slender, silvery colored, fast-moving insects. They can be found virtually anywhere, but they like moist environments with moderate temperatures like basements, laundry rooms, and under kitchen or bathroom sinks.

Damage

Silverfish can create holes in wallpaper and other surfaces within the home. They can leave behind a yellow stain and/or excrement on fabric and paper products inside the home. They are most active at night and feed on a variety of items in the house such as food, paper, books, linens and other fabrics. The females usually lay eggs in dark, well-protected areas.

Location

Silverfish are found throughout the United States.

Cultural Solutions

  • Cardboard boxes in attics can attract Silverfish. Eliminate cardboard boxes and replace with plastic containers
  • Use mothballs in infested areas.
