Chiggers

Chiggers are the larval form of tiny mites and are extremely hard to see with the naked eye. Chiggers have six legs, are red in color, and are about 1/60th of an inch long.

Damage

Sometimes called Red Bugs, Chiggers are found in lawns, woodland and marshy areas, then attach themselves to people as they pass by, latching onto the skin, feeding on blood, and leaving itchy welts that can last up to two weeks.

Welts usually appear on the underarms, backs of knees, and where clothing meets skin – ankles, beltlines, wrists, etc.

Location

Chiggers are found throughout the United States, but are most prevalent in high-humidity regions like the Southeast and Midwest.
